Microlaryngeal excision of vocal nodule

Vocal nodule commonly occurs in patients who constanthly abuse their voice e.g. teachers / singers etc. It always occur in the medial free end of the vocal cord at the junction of anterior 1/3 and posterior 2/3. This site is preferred because it is the most vibrating portion of the vocal cord.

Both cords are affected commonly. In the initial stages voice rest helps in its resolution. Chronically present vocal nodules need to be excised. This surgical procedure is known as microlaryngeal excision. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The anesthetist is requested to use a smaller sized endotracheal tube for intubation. The patient is put in Boyce position and a Klein Sauccer suspension laryngoscope is introduced. The vocal cord is visualised. Operating microscope using a 400mm objective lens is utilised for visualising the cord. The vocal nodule is excised.

The following video clipping shows the surgery being performed.
